FSSAI License is assigned by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Ministry of Family Health & Welfare, Government of India. FSSAI License is a permit or registration needed to be obtained by every food production, processing, distributing, or packaging entity.

This License is administered by The Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006. This Act focuses on enhancing the hygiene and quality of food possible in the market for sale. As per the Act, no person shall begin or carry on any food business besides under an FSSAI license or FSSAI registration. Application to begin a food business must be presented to the FSSAI in the designated format. Based on the application and backing documents, FSSAI will accord consent to the applying entity.

LICENSE TYPE

FSSAI Licenses are of two main types, State License and Central License. Food manufacturers which are medium sized including Hotels and restaurants are required to obtain State Level License while the Large sized manufacturers are required to obtain Central License.

FAQ's

FSSAI License is the basic interim agreement that any food business operator requires to take before beginning any food business in India.
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India in partnership with State Food Authorities are responsible for the implementation & execution of FSSAI, 2006.
 
The position of the Food Authority is placing down science-based standards for articles of food and to manage their manufacture, accommodation, distribution, marketing, and import, to ensure the availability of safe and nutritious food for human consumption. Food Authority is in the method of formulating and concluding the various regulations/guidelines in terms of requirements under the Act to assure the quality and safety of food and delivering effect to the commission of the Food Authority.
 
There will be various licenses issued under FSSA as the specification of each product is distinct. So in the same premises, if a license is being used for processing of meat, milk & fruits & vegetables, there will be a separate permit as these will be made in separate portions & companies are not related. However, in a situation there is fruit & vegetable processing & godown/store accompanying with it since these are associated activities, one license is suitable.
The procedure will continue to be the same.
 
The small food business administrators who have their turnover of up to Rs. 12 lacs require a registration certificate. Food Business Operators who have their turnover higher than Rs. 12 lacs must get a license.
 
The pre-requisites are Form A, Copy of photo ID, Self-attested declaration.
 
 
FSSAI License is issued with a validity of one to five years in any kind that is Basic Registration, State Registration, and Central Registration. The license has to be renewed 30 days before the expiry of the primary license. For restoration to the same plan can be accepted.
 
FSSAI Registrations are given to trivial or small Food Businesses whose turnover is less than Rs. 12 lakhs per annum. The registration certificate introduced in Form C is required to be presented in the food business premise at a notable place.
 
The registration is allotted by the Authority who may be a Food Safety Officer or a Designated Officer or any other administrator in Municipal Corporation or some other local body or Panchayat in a domain. These officials are advised by the State Food Safety Commissioner.

Food business operators need to register them with the Registration Authority by submitting a fssai registration fee online of Rs. 100/- for one year.
 
 
The FBO (Food Business Operator) requires filing a renewal application within 30 days before the expiry of the license. The renewal application filed after the expiry of 30 days will attract a penalty of Rs. 100/- per day till the submission of the renewal application. The renewal option will be available to FBO 120 days prior to the expiry of the valid license.
