A cheque is said to be dishonored or bounced when it is granted for payment to a bank but it is not funded by the bank because of some reason. Causes may be fraud, insufficient funds, crossed cheques, confusion on the cheque, etc.

Cheque bounce is a criminal offense punishable with imprisonment for a time up to two years or with a penalty twice the amount of the cheque or both.
